How to Open the Cash Box

1/18/2007 11:57:00 AM

A question from Johanne Fulford...
Q: About a year ago I bought a 1993 Williams "Mermaids Gold" slot machine - and had it configured to take CDN bills and coins. I've been using it as my piggy bank in-house ever since.

There's got to be a ton of money in it at this point, because it just stopped taking in bills. The problem is that have no idea how to get the paper money out of the machine! Ha!

The people who sold it to me are now unreachable (sad) - so I'm trying to find a gentler alternative to my ever-hand sledgehammer.

Any ideas how I might open this thing up & reclaim my cash? I have the keys for the coin hopper (front panel) as well as a key for the side door - but the bill collector thing looks like it's got two holes on it - and no amount of fiddling it around can get it to come out.
A: If you look at the top right side there should be a little lever if you push down the cash box you should be able to pull the cash box out.

  • I have purchased a slot machine ( being shipped as we speak ) and I also would like to know how to retrieve the cash from the cash box. The previous answer doesn't exactly cover the queston. It explains how to remove the box but not the cash from the box. Please explain for us slot machine rookies. :-)

  • The previous answer is not correct for Wms40S series slots (Dotmation). It was intended for IGT S+ owners, and was not complete for them either.

First: To access an IGT S+ cash box open the slot door. The cash assy is on the lower right wall inside the cabinet and has a hinged door that may or may not have a lock in place. Open the door and push down on the little lever and pull the cash box out. The cash box will have a swinging hinged door on the bottom that can have up to 2 locks on it. If there are no locks it will simply swing open and you can get the cash. Most home sold slots won't have any locks.

Second: Williams 40S (Dotmation) and Bally 5500/6000 series slots have a wooden door on the outside right of the cabinet behind the slot handle. It is locked with a round lock that hopefully can be opened with the same key that the seller gave you to open the main door. If not, contact the seller for the key.

The cash can is locked in place, so to get it out without the special official tool, insert an unwanted credit card (it will be scratched) into the vertical space between the box and the wall on one side of the cash box and at the same time pull that side of the box out slightly. Then, while holding that side to keep it from locking again, carefully insert the card into the crack on other side of the box and repeat. Then gently pull the can straight out. The bills will be exposed on the top of the can.

Note: If you want to buy the cash box removal tool they can usually be found on ebay.
